Supercharged 2GR SW20 Project

Post by lasersooby »

PROJECT CAR

I am working on a project to build a 1990 Targa Top SW20 with a supercharged 2GR.
I wanted to do a project after returning from Saudi Arabia last year (was there for 10years working in the biggest canned manufacturing plant - 3million can bodies/day & 6million ends/day, Fonterra's 6th biggest customer for dairy products) and decided on doing up an MR2 with either a V8 or a supercharged V6.
Did a bit of research on both options and I was not keen on cutting up the body to fit in a V8 hence it has gone to the V6 option which seems to be a very common re-power now all around the world.
I bought a Targa Top NA auto MR2 with a blown bottom end for $250 and have been busy stripping it bare body. Pleased that the car has no rust, just a small ding on the front (easily fixed since I am replacing the whole front) and it is overall in very good condition. The usual perished rubber etc. around the Targa but since I was going to completely gut it and re-start from there, all of the rubbers etc will be replaced.

DONOR CAR

To help with getting uprated items, I managed to get my hands on a manual SW20 Turbo-charged MR2 (hardtop) for $600, this one had an overheating engine and was manual with a pretty good interior. This was going to be my donor car for wiring and a few other bits and pieces

The car has been completely stripped and is with the panel/painter as of last week.
I will put up some pictures of the journey and also the names of all the suppliers/contact detaisl for anyone else that wants to grab bits and pieces if they wish
Any questions or suggestions, just contact me :D
Thanks to Brian for encouraging me to start up a thread on my build.

Going to be a cool project!

What supercharger are you going to use?

If you want to get rid of some rear brake calipers, i am after some of the 22v ones.

Cheers,

Douglas

Hi mate, I am goingto be using the Eaton M72 which is similar to the one used in the supercharged TRD Aurion. I have already committed to buying this kit through Gouky (Marc) in the US who has done a lot of good work and is a genius. I have bought so far everything that he has done for this repower through him, very trustworthy and does not just push and sell something to you just for the sake of it.
The kit that I have committed to is going to provide around 450HP at the wheels and insane amount of torque.
I will be adding more pictures soon of what I have already got and will put up a post regarding who supplied what.
Regards, Mo

Unfortunately I have only the 16V calipers. I had to buy a set of 22V calipers from a dismantler in Southland, awesome guy and very quick service. Price was around $150 for the pair delivered

Yeah, definitely as I do not want to have another car in this case body lying around. If you need any help anytime re: suppliers etc. I can provide the information and will also update one of the posts up top with the supplier details. The blue car is actually pretty straight as well, I just wanted a Targa Top hence the reason for using this as a donor only

MOCKING UP THE BODY KIT ON CAR

Post by lasersooby »

Spent a little bit of time today with Ross to see how the bodykit would fit, surprised how they went on once we worked out what went where. We worked on the left side first.
Had to dummy fit the Sard Side Vents into the Side Sides of the bodykit first the tape it to the body. Both wheel flares are taped on and also the TRD spoiler is held in place with one bolt only on the boot

Hi David, thanks. I will keep updating the 4th post which will contain all the contact details of my suppliers of parts so that anyone wishing to do the same could contact the suppliers directly mate/
I am looking forward to get this going as well but since I am only working on this in the weekends or after work, it will be a slow process but we will get there :D

Thanks for that! I'm probably not exaggerating when I say people all over the world would be thanking you for that. I know what you mean. I'm a weekend warrior too. I have to pay people if I want work done in regular hours, haha
