Factory suspension - so just over 30 years old, just thought might be a good idea to upgrade? Previous owner may have put lowering springs in it, at this point I wont be able to get a WOF :? Is it worth the money to get BC golds in or is that a bit too much???

Lowering springs are fine, as long as the ground clearance is at least 100mm and the springs are captive when the wheels are off the ground. Factory replacement parts are generally quite cheap and quite comfortable. BC Golds are alot firmer than stock, which means you will feel every bump in the road. If you're not doing any motorsport activities then there isn't much point putting coilovers in. Also be aware that coilovers require a cert, I think it's about $750 or something like that on top of the price of the coilovers.

Get new inserts put in to your shocks
if you don't want your car off the road I might have a few 1984 shocks around here you can have for cheap + P&P

The BC Coil over is not that great for street driving even with a softer spring in it .
Boosted cars are like hot women.
A little edgy, every guy wants one,
some guys can't handle them,
and if you throw a little alcohol in them they'll rock your world.

Might be an idea! Will keep those in mind and let you know soon, the thing is the ground clearance is 80mm so maybe changing the inserts won't change anything?
In this case, would it be a better idea for me to replace the whole suspension, and what with? OEM or something that doesn't need a cert - as she's my daily.

Ground clearance is not measured to body kits but the body itself. 80mm seems very low and based on the photos I don't think it's that low.

Shocks do not control your height so no matter if they are good or bad you will still be at that height. This is the best route as coilovers like others mention require a cert, this costs extra, locks your car to +/-5% of the certed height defeating the purpose of adjustable suspension and also locks your wheel size onto the cert plate riveted to your car. Works for some and not for others.

New shocks will make a big difference to the car if the old ones are worn. You will be far more stable in corners, the car will bounce less with lowered springs and just be safer in general. Even just factory replacements are better than nothing.

The thing is there is less than 100mm clearance from the ground, try 80mm  now decided to steer away from BC's and heavy duty racing suspension just for practicality.. not sure what else to get though - been reading through some forums and websites.. what are your thoughts on Tokico blue, godspeed and that sort?
Any advice or input will be much appreciated

I've been to a mechanic and he was shocked I even had a WOF due to the fact that he couldn't fit a 100mm block underneath the car. I understand that adjusties need to be certed, it will cost extra. I was just wondering if any one would have any advice on what suspension I could be looking at to replace my 32 year old, worn ones. Cheers

I guess it is then, just doesn't look like a super low car.

There is a lot out there. Are you wanting a full spring and shock setup or just shocks? I know you have springs already but thought I'd ask the question.

There's the following
Toyota OEM
Tokico which is a Toyota OEM manufacture plus some performance parts too. Some people like them and others don't.
They have fixed or adjustable dampers too. HP fixed or Illumina adjustable.
Koni make an adjustable set.
KYB but they are a cheap OEM replacement and I'd get OEM Toyota if going with low priced stuff like that. Unless you can find an adjustable set then they could be good.
Monroe probably make some but again cheap OEM replacement.

If money isn't an issue then Koni Yellow Adjustable would be my pick of the above for keeping your car as it is.

After thorough research I've decided to go for Koni Yellow adjusties! Along with Eibach pro-kit lowering springs - as recommended by many (and yourself)
Hopefully all goes well and will update once arrived and installed :P :P Thanks all so far for recommendations

Quick question, do the Koni's fit the factory strut housing? just thinking through the installation process before proceeding..

They are inserts so yes they should just swap out. Where are you looking to but these from? Twosrus have them for $325USD a pair plus shipping which might be a bit. Autolign here can get them and I'm sure other places can too. A good combination of spring and shock I think.

It's been recommended by many on the web and other mr2 owners. I'm going to order them from PrimeMr2, which is also based in the states, shipping not being a major issue for myself. Haven't thought of checking out the NZ stores as I'd suspect they'd be significantly more expensive.

I have a pair of rear ones that will need a rebuild if you want them, they won't fit my casings as the facelift aw11 has a bigger strut. George Stock and Co in Mt Wellington can rebuild and are nationwide distributor for Koni, so you may want to give them a call
