Jamie16's first AW11
Hey, First time MR2 owner. Decided on an AW as I come from a single seater past in car racing and so having the engine in the back always made sence to me. Picked myself up a couple of AW11's from Queenstown back in Feb off a guy who rescued both of them from a scrapyard. He didn't make any progress on them though other than pulling some things apart so I brought them off him.
One was a horrendous purple colour and not much left of it of use other than a windscreen and some other wee bits. It's since made a well earned return to the scrap yard.
The other is nearly complete, and I was told the only reason it didn't run was due to a crook dizzy and he had a spare for it.
Here she is on pickup.. It had an engine dropped on the left front while in the yard which smashed the windscreen and LF guard and bonnet, but the donor car came with these parts intact. Also the RR quarter window was smashed out so the thing is filled with broken glass Seems to be pretty straight and rust free otherwise... Started with trying to get the motor up and running so I could work out what condition gearbox etc was in. Swapped out the dizzy and banged a new o-ring on it while there. Turns out the old dizzy was ok anyway, the reason for the lack of spark was the ignition module wasn't earthing properly. That wasn't all though, the starter was playing up and the fuel pump was a no-go.
Guess I kinda got thrown in the deep end of AW ownership with this one. Dropped the tank to find the pump had died due to an insane amount of rust in the tank... Lucky I had a spare in the donor car that was much better condition. Swapped the tanks and threw a new pump at it, sorted the starter out and had another crack at it. It actually started and ran ok after all that... Except for the run bearing noises
Time for a rebuild

Welcome!
Sherwood AWs are awesome! These cars are awesome to drive around the track, I'm sure you'll really enjoy it. Good luck with getting it up to scratch - it shouldn't take much (mechanically).

Re: Jamie16's first AW11
Hey, thanks!
Turns out the bearings were well gone, and the crank was stuffed, as was the bores. Ended up scrapping the entire bottom end.
Found a good 7-rib block with the oil squirters and later model oil pump as a new starting point. Going a little different to most and using blacktop rods with smallport pistons with the idea of making rotating mass lighter. Hence the new lightweight flywheel and pulleys waiting to find their way on to it. As it sits at the mo the bottom end is pretty much ready, and I'm waiting on some new exhaust valves to arrive from RockAuto so I can bolt the head on.
Not looking to go too crazy with the rebuild just want something reliable for now, so will just be using the bluetop cams and a 0.8mm TRD HG.
Have been giving the engine bay a good clean out and tidy up while the motor and box are out, got some bits re-plated and they came up pretty good

Wow that replating looks awesome!
I personally like your idea of lighter rotating mass, hopefully with the intention of a bit of head work and a few more mm's of lift and another thousand or so rpms...

It might pay to keep the original harmonic balancer for the bottom pulley for reliability. It's tempting to get rid of it but it's there for a reason. You can also remove that pulley arrangement out on the right hand side as it's only a tensioner and you can use the alternator adjustment for that. It's something like an 860mm 5PK if I remember right.
See ya

I'm going to be watching this build with interest.
Where did you get the electroplating done Jamie?
It's always good to know where good work gets done so we know where to go...
And the other thing is, if you ever want to post pics taken on an iPhone (if that's what you're using?) be sure to put them on a computer and do something like raise the sharpening a micron before saving them. Saving a change to them on a Mac / PC before uploading them to the forum makes then show right way up. Whereas if you just pull them off the iPhone onto the computer then upload them, they come out sideways or upside down half the time. Just an infuriating thing about an iPhone (whereas everything else about them tends to be great).
Keep it coming mate! Nice.

Re: Jamie16's first AW11
Hey guys, thanks for the advice! Plating was done locally down here in Invercargill, Winteringham Eletroplaters. Hmmm yes I have been wondering about harmonic balancers... Would love to have some extra cash to spend at MRP for bits like that... Will have to wait and see how everything else pans out.
Been working on the poor old girl today, getting pretty sick of finding damn broken glass everywhere, but starting to see some progress. Interior is mostly back together now, complete with very basic but working and tidy stereo system. Still on the hunt for a few wee missing trims though, anyone on here got much AW interior stuff floating around?
Exhaust valves still haven't turned up yet which has put a hold on engine work. I did give the head a good tidy up in the ports before getting it skimmed, for no though I'm just throwing the original set of cams in it, really just want to get it back up and running for a start, so that I can actually get a drive of it and see what all the fuss is about!
Every time I look at that battery bracket assembly I cringe... Will be trying an AGM dry battery, but have been looking for suitable locations for it.. Maybe under passenger seat? Is that legal? Kinda not really getting too excited about putting it in boot or frunk just cause the its outside of the wheelbase...

The belt I use is 830mm 4PK with the belt to the outside of the pulleys so you can see the timing marks better with a timing light.85AW20v wrote:It might pay to keep the original harmonic balancer for the bottom pulley for reliability. Boosted cars are like hot women.
A little edgy, every guy wants one,
some guys can't handle them,
and if you throw a little alcohol in them they'll rock your world.

What interior parts are you after? I've got two center consoles and the little tape box thing sitting around

Re: Jamie16's first AW11
So far the things I've found to be missing are:
- Driver's wing mirror triangle interior plastic
- Passenger side (is there a difference?) door sill plastic trim
- Ash tray? looks as though there may be an ash tray or similar missing from the front piece of the centre console just in front of the gear lever hole
- Door rubber mounting brackets for along the A-pillar/roofline, missing all of them
- A pillar exterior trims, both sides
- front windscreen lower plastic trim
- RH front indicator lens
Yanked the radiator out of it today, it's stuffed too...Looks as though the coolant system being neglected was the reason the engine died and it got parked up in the first place. Anyone used the alloy rads on trademe with good results?

I've used one for a few years now, no issues. Not sure on others experiences.Jamie16 wrote:Yanked the radiator out of it today, it's stuffed too...Looks as though the coolant system being neglected was the reason the engine died and it got parked up in the first place. As for battery, what I've done is use a motobatt for a motorbike mounted low down on the front rail in the engine bay, with a bracket made by Malcolm on here but could be easy enough to knockup one with some right angle and a bit of time.
Keeps the weight low, and wiring only 20-30cm of cable length direct onto starter.
310 CCA's is enough for the high compression 2zzge and as long as you don't need to jump start your car often it could be a good option
Ignore the rest of the exposed wiring and wild oil cooler lines - they're all tidied up now

Re: Jamie16's first AW11
Hmmm yes this is a pretty good setup. Been looking for a suitable place on that rail, but obviously with the 4age in there the exhaust is on that side of the bay so not too keen on battery on the drivers side of the rail, even though there's a much better space for it. And the carbon canister is pretty well in the way on the passenger side, maybe I can relocate that somewhere else...
Working through a nightmare with shitty coolant/heater lines at the moment, I need to clean them out then finish/shorten up the ends a little to remove the worst of the rust. Anyone found a good system to coat these with to prevent further rust?

Re: Jamie16's first AW11
Made some more progress over the weekend. Exhaust valves turned up from Rock Auto so have started piecing the head together, got the shims all set up and sorted Luckily had three full sets of shims to choose from, needed them!
Ended up taking the rad from the spare car I had to my local radiator guy who cleaned it out for me, that should do for a while. Fitted new radiator hoses and cleaned out the heater pipes too. I'm hoping to ditch the short pipes that work past the steering rack and just run hose straight up to the firewall. Finally the fuel tank is back in the car (again) hopefully for the last time. The filler hose has split, I do have a spare but it's pretty brittle feeling too so I may end up finding a different solution there.
Ordered a Aerotech front lip to help hide the mess that is my front valence, only feel I may have ordered the wrong one. Will see how it sits after a little more panel beating.
Also picked up a rear exhaust system off an RX8 that I think I will make fit, it's not too far off really... Next big problem on the list is swapping bellhousings on my C50 to a double hump type so I can run the starter on the intake side to make room for 20v extractors and so that I can tidy the wiring loom up a lot. The speedo pickup in my housing is well jammed, currently soaking in WD40. Hoping if I can get that out life will get easier from there
