AGM Off-shoot

AGM OFFSHOOT

Began with farewelling the MR2 faithful in Te Kuiti to go North to enjoy the Big O.

Having done the Big O earlier we headed south from Te Kuiti to Ohura - winding, narrow sealed road that took us back to the 50's. So interesting with Totara posts and battens with moss, olde houses, narrow tracks up impossible hillsides with slips and papa faces. Joined the Taumaranui-Whangamomona road and man is this MR2 country, some even second gear, much wheel-work and turboed boost. Only a few other vehicles and all very co-operative. Quickly to Whanga Pub for lunch then on towards Stratford - U turn at Toko (20km from Stratford) and back to Whanga, its even better returning over the numerous saddles and tight curves. The 12km of gravel after Whanga was smooth and the trip to Taumaranui exhilarating. We did the Forgotten Highway 20 Tunnel Rail Cart on Monday. Back to Whangamomona and returned by bus. Overawed by what those guys did between 1902-1930 building the rail line. Coming to the AGM makes you get off your chuff and discover some exciting parts of NZ.

Didn't take too many photos of the roads cause we were changing gears every two seconds but here's some photos of the trip mainly on the 20 Tunnel Self drive Rail Trail - a fantastic day

Great photos Jim (& Danusia). I especially like the hotel, the tow truck, the pork pie (mini) one of the bridge shots and the inside of the tunnel. 8)

Just one question though. What's with this?

 P.S. I might need to start a forum section called "Trippin'" or something for threads like this, seeing as Rides is more about your car, and currently there's no suitable place for these kind of posts. So if this disappears don't worry, it will just have moved to a new home intended to prompt others to also post similar stories about their trips around our beautiful wee country.

OK, never knew that a steering wheel in a train was called a tree...

Are those carts electric or pedal power?

Looks like loads of fun apart from the rush hour shot.
