Re: tw2's mr2 - the journey to a clean 2
Yep I have a photo already I sent to Toyota.
That's a good point thanks, the replacement OEM bars are US$28 each so might be easiest/safest to do this. By the time I find some pipe, crush the ends and drill it I will probably wish I just bought new ones. I also don't think the aftermarket brace is compatible with the swaybar reinforcement plates which I think are more important. I am pretty sure looking at the design that they are not going to stack up nicely.

Re: tw2's mr2 - the journey to a clean 2
For a road car these Ultra Racing bars will just add weight. Not really an advantage. You can make things better in other ways.
I don't think the plates and UR bars will mount up together either.
Yeah the flat spots on each side of the battery are where the power steering stuff goes. The OEM power steering cars have big holes there.

Re: tw2's mr2 - the journey to a clean 2
Just ordered bush kit, swaybar links, swaybar re-enforcement plates, engine lid clip and an oil filter from twosrus, it was supposedly 14.5 pounds so round up to 7kg. Shipping was going to be US$128 to NZ so had it shipped to youshop in Oregon for US$29 where I expect it to be approx NZ$65 to get it to me. Just thought I would post up some costs so others know what to expect.
Hopefully I can stop this car creaking itself to pieces!
Stupid question- is it a bad idea to put lubrication on the non-moving outer part of the bushes? I figured it might help keep water out from between the bushes and brackets.

Re: tw2's mr2 - the journey to a clean 2
Did some work. You can see the state of the frunk above. First was to sand a bit and neutralise all the surface rust. I pulled the battery tray out completely and treated the small metal "drain" fitting and metal spacers too. I also did the plastic shroud framing. Looks like a mess.
Now completely sealed and will never rust again. The coating is very very resilient and will resist the tyre rubbing on the bottom. The shroud should cover the edges from black to blue but rust proofing is more important.
Battery tray reinstalled, all edged beneath treated and all hardware replaced with stainless steel.

I am very happy how this all came together.
I also treated this lower crossmember, it was 99% fine, just a tiny bit of surface rust just starting around the tack welds.

I am particularly proud how these came out. I thought they were dead.
And a large present from Toyota.

Haha not quite. I would do more in depth writeups of some parts but Phill has already done them all.mknz wrote:Are you the new GDII

A new windscreen cowl?
I'm sure you can find something to add to, maybe there isn't a lot

That's some impressive work! Too bad you didn't get a set of my swaybar reinforcement plates. I think my design looks a little better.tw2 wrote:Haha not quite. I would do more in depth writeups of some parts but Phill has already done them all.mknz wrote:Are you the new GDII

Don't let my write ups stop you doing yours. It's about your car and documenting the process you took. It's always good to look back on.
I can't wait to the the big box opened up. My cowl is going to need another coat of CarPro DLUX soon as it's starting to fade. Rather hard to apply properly when you can't wipe and buff in the ribs. Brush applied...

Re: tw2's mr2 - the journey to a clean 2
Yep new cowl. I pulled it all to pieces. Removed all the gunk I took pictures of in the other thread. The wiper linkage was brown and very crusty so took that out. Here it is rust treated. Then sealed. I used brunox in both liquid and spray form and miracle paint. I wouldn't bother with the spray but the other two have been excellent. They are very liquid and spread a long way. Everything I have done hasn't even taken 1/4 of a liter. I bought 1 liter tins but just a pint would work well (they are both fairly expensive unfortunately). I treated the top and also checked for rust underneath where the aluminium triangles mount and there was some there so took care of that too. Wiper arms are being spray painted tomorrow and I will update the recent wiper blade thread I made with that final outcome. Should all look quite good hopefully. Just waiting on a pile of bolts from Japan via Toyota and new rear swaybar brackets from Japan too. Oh and they are waiting on the manual steering inner tie rods as they gave me power steering ones by accident. Should be running again in 2-3 weeks max. Next will be total shifter overhaul and then no idea.... lots to choose from.mknz wrote:A new windscreen cowl?

Re: tw2's mr2 - the journey to a clean 2
Thanks. I looked at (having a professional) plastic welding the original one and painting it but I didn't trust that I could get a good result painting plastic with my skills. Toyota don't have any cowls here or in Japan and don't make them routinely but they were nice enough to make me a new one which blew me away.GDII wrote:That's some impressive work! Wait what?!! Toyota made you a part for a 28 year old car? Must have cost a fair amount!
