Re: tw2's mr2 - the journey to a clean 2
The OEM turbo uses a fitting off the upper tree part then loops back to one of the bypass pipes around the back of the engine. You need it to circulate better than what the throttle body line does. Might not be safe to do what you have planned. Even the GEN3 3SGTE throttle body loops in the same way as the turbo cooling.
This is a GEN3 3SGTE. Yeah bypass the throttle body, it's not cold enough to worry about it every getting ice in the the throttle plate and not being able to close.
Fuel return is the blue arrow. Note the non high pressure hose clamp vs the feed line.
1 is the ECU coolant temp sensor
2 is the Gauge coolant temp sensor
Red arrows are your A/C idle up valve system. Note how it bypasses the throttle plate.

Re: tw2's mr2 - the journey to a clean 2
Thanks heaps. I think I will be replicating the coolant feed in a 3sgte. Both the turbo and throttle body use the same designed circuit from what I can tell. The both have a hose exiting the coolant neck/tree, through the throttle body/turbo and back to the same bypass pipe in slightly different places. I seem to remember the turbo water lines were not particularly large. I realise water lines are not even needed but it would be good to make it as reliable as possible.
Here are the gen 2 3sge and 3sgte heads exhaust side. I think these were Malcolm's pictures from years back.

Unfortunately neither of the new water neck or tree will fit on the 3sge. I was pretty sure but not 100% that this would be the case. The old ones are ok but I don't really want to use them again. Stay tuned for the absurd solution over the next few weeks to make it all fit nicely.

Tank repainted. Old pump out. Surprisingly good condition. I wanted to reuse the hose clamps so that worked out well. New pump in and reassembled.

Re: tw2's mr2 - the journey to a clean 2
Is it just the idle valve getting in the way? Olaf has a custom remote mount that might fit that he isn't using anymore. Just requires some extended wiring or might not be needed for the 3SGE.

The filler neck also clashes with the throttle body snout as well. I had two general plans to tackle this project (turbo) and this was the deciding point.

Re: tw2's mr2 - the journey to a clean 2
This sucked a whole lot but it is done finally. Given the lockdown I couldn't even buy a new hacksaw blade to snap in half. Luckily the metal is very soft. I am thinking I will just get some 19mm hose and not worry about beads or flaring at the ends, there really is no room to do so without removing both pipes. I will make sure there is decent overlap and use two OEM hose clamps.
Throttle body will not be having coolant running through it anymore. A bolt, some gasket maker and a clamp should keep it sealed until it will be removed and a turbo coolant hose put in its place.
Could you guys please tell me what these switching valves are for and the giant crud covered thing. Photo is from under the car looking up at the intake manifold from just in front of the lower subframe. I know one of them must be for the ACIS system. I am looking to simplify things a bit.

Giant black thing is the vacuum canister. It dampens out vacuum spikes. One is for ACIS and the other is for fuel pressure up for hot starting I believe. Best leave them all in place. Even the turbo engines have a vacuum canister. The GEN4 has it only for the boost controller bleed air which I don't quite get.

Curiously, my gen 3 doesn't have one of those. So maybe just a gen 2 thing?GDII wrote: ↑Thu Apr 02, 2020 9:14 pmGiant black thing is the vacuum canister. It dampens out vacuum spikes. It should have 1. Image 3. EDIT: Or if I was actually correct it's image 4 and you are right.4CylinderSpecial wrote: ↑Fri Apr 03, 2020 8:40 amCuriously, my gen 3 doesn't have one of those. Re: tw2's mr2 - the journey to a clean 2
Thats cool. I will clean it up and leave it in place when I can buy some more degreaser. I found some old pictures of my gt4. Looks like it was for the same thing, TVIS and the crappy boost control valve that I believe I already removed. I don't remember it going to the fuel pressure regulator though but I traced the lines on the 3sge which definitely does.

Not the same canister on gen 3 type. Only parts I see are diaphragms rather than surge tank.GDII wrote: ↑Fri Apr 03, 2020 10:26 amIt should have 1. Re: tw2's mr2 - the journey to a clean 2
Yeah the GEN2 3SGE has a massive one. Sorry it should be image 4 for the GEN3 3SGTE. GEN2 3SGTE had 2 revisions. 89-91 and 92-93. You are right as is Levi, the GEN3 3SGTE doesn't have one. Got the images mixed up.Benckj wrote: ↑Fri Apr 03, 2020 12:19 pmNot the same canister on gen 3 type. Re: tw2's mr2 - the journey to a clean 2
Just ordered two of these https://www.enginemaster.com.au/aeroflo ... -145~15260
I measured the brass heater pipe at around 20.5mm so hopefully this stuff with an internal diameter of 19mm will be about right. The angle looked approximately 45 degrees, I even had a protractor under the car with me. I will let everyone know how it goes, it should arrive in 1-2 weeks being an essential item according to trademe
