Still waiting on the engine shop and parts from Japan. I have been slowly rust treating and painting parts.

Finally was the turbo test fit. There were mostly successes. The turbo fits fine, the wastegate clears the 3sge heat shield behind it. I measured up all the oil and coolant lines I will need and it should all be doable. Even the heavy cast iron bracket for the turbo that sits underneath would fit- it will bind on the heat shield but I think it just needs some minor massaging with a grinder.

The not so good is that the downpipe won't fit with the oil filter. It is a bit of a surprise as the 3sgte and 3sge oil cooler placement looks around about the same. If I can find an oil filter that is no more than about 53mm then it would work but the exhaust might not be very healthy for it. Otherwise I will need a filter relocation kit.

All looking really good! Nice progress!

Can you get a shorter filter? Maybe the cooler is taller?

I will order an HKS filter, they are a lot shorter, I doubt it will work but worth a shot. I think the 3sgte cooler is slightly angled upwards in comparison. I don't think it is any thicker, removing the filter and the entire cooler sounds normal for installing some downpipes on the 3sgte reading on mr2oc.

Otherwise I would very much like to avoid the complication of a remote mount. Some use the A\C mounts but I am definitely not parting with my A\C compressor. Some mount them by the intercooler but there really isn't much room.

Ah yes. The GEN2 3SGTE does use that adapter. The GEN3 doesn't as the filter is on the sump. Seems like you found a problem that Toyota found while developing the engine.

Pic of my gen 3 engine showing cooler and location of filter off lower oil pump housing. Maybe you could convert to something similiar??

That's a lot of work there too to swap to the GEN3 sump. Needs a GEN3 oil pump too. Starting to get expensive.

Probably the same reason the oil dipstick tube is different. The N\A headers fit but the right cast iron exhaust mount isn't compatible with the 3sgte dipstick despite the block mounting holes being the same on all 3s blocks. I think it is hugely overkill so only the left mount will go back on.

My next task is figuring out which dipstick I need. It only comes about 2cm below the sump mounting surface under the block so I need a much longer one. I presume it should protrude at least 2-3 inches.

Yep much better design. Remote mount isn't too difficult, I just don't want to. Hopefully the short filter will work.

A bit of a nerve wracking day. Drilling into the head isn't the best feeling. I decided to leave the top two studs as they didn't pull out and only repair the bottom four which are destroyed. It won't be easy but all the tools will easily fit to repair the top two in the car if they break later on. The time-sert kit is NZ$350 from wurth which is quite expensive. The only "specialist" tool in there is the seat cutting tool (creates a nice flat recession for the lip of the insert to sit in). I just used a standard conical burr. It isn't neat or symmetrical but it got the job done since the insert must sit below the surface of the flange to get a seal, it wouldn't matter at all for regular mounting. Next is a standard M12x1.25 tap and a 10.8mm drill bit (10.75 if you can actually find one) both in high speed steel HSS. I used a normal steel M10x1.25 bolt covered in oil to seat and expand the insert threads.

This is impossible to get perfectly straight by hand and even the drilling will probably be off centre unless you make a bolt on steel jig. I don't know how much it matters in this situation. I definitely wouldn't repair head bolt threads without a sturdy drill guide.
