Another W20 project "Sweet Torque"
Short block machined and rebuilt by Marsh Motorsports with new oil tubes, Carrillo pistons, Eagle rods and ARP hardware. Head modified and rebuilt by AutoSpeed Engineering with new seals, valves, springs, guides, retainers and an upgrade to shim under bucket style lifters for better valve train stability. Head and block mated by me with a Cometic metal gasket, new oil pump, new water pump, new tensioner and pulleys.
Will use E85, a 75mm throttle body, HKS 272 cams, Link G4 ECU, Walbro fuel pump, Bosch injectors, RacerX fuel rail, RacerX inlet manifold, custom exhaust and a new turbo to make me about 400HP. Water/Air intercooler, remote mounted turbo, engine oil and gearbox coolers plus engine cover fans will deal with the extra heat.
Modified the new water pump by removing its impellers, a Davies Craig electric pump mounted up front moves the coolant through a new aluminium radiator instead.
Bushes, boots, ball joints and bump stops have all been replaced with urethane where applicable. Custom urethane engine mounts, rebuilt axles with Camry CV’s, a rebuilt transaxle and a new 450HP clutch complete the power plant.
Scored some kouki tail lights a while back...
These will look good on it.

Re: Another W20 project "Sweet Torque"
Set myself targets to miss because I consistently underestimate the complexity of even the smallest job on an MR2.
Fairly sure I have missed a hundred little details in my overall plan but a project car can't be just a car until it's done.
Cleaned and treated the fuel tank with this stuff today...
Leaves a dry hard coating on the inside of the gas tank to resist the ravages of E85.
RacerX hanger, Walbro pump and new seals finished the gas tank.

I like where this is going mate. Gonna be a real interesting build. Be nice to see you on a run in it.
Interesting typo on the gas tank sealer's label.
Don't forget to give it some damn good rubber.

Re: Another W20 project "Sweet Torque"
lol, never noticed that typo before.
I like RE003's so Ill probably fit those.
Biggest technical challenge will be the remote turbo.
Water is easy to deliver and a scavenge pump will help with the oil.
But, there's not a tonne of room under the boot floor so the exhaust is going to be tricky.

Remote turbo will be interesting. You're right about the lack of space, maybe you can do it just behind the crossmember? Do you want it to be visible?

Re: Another W20 project "Sweet Torque"
Nope, tuck it up nice and tight I feel. The turbo I want is 3500bux, putting it out of harms way seems like a smart idea.
Also, I want a 4-2-1 manifold and the O2 sensor needs to be at least 25cm from the explosions. soo yeah... gunna be snug back there.
Problems for later tho, mission the next is to get the engine in and drive line back together.

Re: Another W20 project "Sweet Torque"
Sorry, re reading that I could have been a bit clearer.
Yes, that's what I was thinkin, nice solid mounting point there.
This way I figure one 90 bend from the pressure side of the turbo, through the boot floor and into the inter cooler. Then another 90 bend from the inter cooler, through the rear firewall into the plenum chamber. Nice short intake.
I hope

Re: Another W20 project "Sweet Torque"
So... a big piece of the power puzzle fell into place today. Charlie at NZKW gave me a red hot deal on a turbo he calls a GTX3582.
T3 frame, good for a bit over 500HP
Trim 84, comp wheel 62/85mm
Definitely not a Garrett but $2k is a great deal, so I grabbed it.
All my maths says the exhaust cam is big enough to keep this thing fed without too much lag.
But I guess it wont be long now before we find out.

Re: Another W20 project "Sweet Torque"
Project two is consuming a lot of my time BUT, I have finished the manifold porting for project one...
Messy job but might be worth 20HP

Re: Another W20 project "Sweet Torque"
There has been a suggestion from one of my mechanics that we should build an engine cradle to setup and test the engine outside of the car.
Thinking that through, it means we get a chance to setup and test the engine, electrics, cooling and fuel systems BEFORE they go into the car. Might be real handy for spotting issues/leaks before it all goes into the confined spaces of the SW20, and it makes the same testing highly repeatable.
Thoughts?

Re: Another W20 project "Sweet Torque"
OH... finally got the timing finished.
New 5SFE oil pump with the drive gear from the original pump, new everything else.
Next step is pending a decision on the engine cradle idea.
