Thomas' Gen 4 Swap SW

Post by GlanzaAtHeart »

Hey everyone,

As many of you know, my SW20 Turbo got written off just over a month ago.

Today marks the start of the new SW20, with the heart taken from the last.

It's a 1989 Rev 1 GT Hardtop, repainted in 2018 in VW Indigo Blue.

I picked the shell up from just out of Palmy yesterday, trailered it up to Auckland today early in the morning. Tip: V8 Commodores make GREAT tow cruisers - So. Much. Torque.

Dropped it off to the storage unit I rented in the AM, and by this evening I mounted the engine, subframe, and shocks.

I'll keep ya updated. Ideally will be ready by Toyotafest at the end of the month.

Yeah thanks team, made pretty weak progress today though.

Body loom is now swapped over after some fuel pump issues, the fuel pump connector wasn't apart of the red shell's body loom for some reason, and was run with speaker wire?? into the dash for some unknown reason. So having to a run a new fuel pump wire. No big deal, but all I had on hand myself, was again, speaker wire. So ended up with this (temporary) wiring solution:
fuel pump wiring.jpg
But now the car won't crank. Any ideas on what to go through? Has fuel (Pump primes, can hear injectors going), starter seems to be wired up fine, the relay clicks. Cheers team.

The pump should not prime unless you turn the key to start.

Very odd about the fuel pump wiring. I'm not 100% sure where the fuel pump wiring heads but I think it goes under the dashboard and then down the left side of the car.

Turns out, there was power at the battery, but no power at the positive terminal in the fuse box. Who knew there was a terminal you have to bolt down in the fron under the dash in the passenger footwell??

5 mins of help from Logan, it was good to go. Cranked, and started.

Yesterday we managed to get most of the interior changed over, rear brake calipers on, brake and clutch pedals changed over (Honestly a lot harder than I thought), and a couple other small jobs.

What's left is:

Front and rear brake lines (Have braided ones to be fitted). If anyone has any tips to not round the bolt as all it seems to want to do is round off, that'd be great.
Front calipers and rotors fitted
Fuel pump wiring
Oil pressure sensor wiring (We broke it haha)
Heater lines made
Rear swaybar links
Bonnet latch

Then we just bleed all the fluids, and should be good to go :)

Me!
But I wouldn't have thought it was that.
Didn't you notice that when you changed out the body harness?

Sounds like good progress though. Well done!
Do you mean the brake line flare nuts rounding? If so you can get special spanners for them.

Haha. Fair enough. I must get you to pop round to the 'Workshop' as such. No I didn't see it haha.

Yeah the flare nuts. I googled and I see what you mean. I might go and buy one from repco, hopefully I haven't done too much damage.

Yeah that will be cool. Or Toyota Fest if not before then. I'm very keen to try and make that also!! 🀞🏻🀞🏻

If the flare nuts already a bit too munted you might have to use vice grips to get it off and replace the nut and reflare (another tool set for you to buy)

Well got all the flare nuts off today. With *Some* persuasion from my good friend the vice grips.
Flare Nuts.jpg
But then tradegy stuck! This nut not only is absolutely destroyed, but the top of thread is flared out, where it needs to slide in the brake line. It wouldn't fit. I'm not sure why it's flared out. It fit the normal brake line fine, but when I went to put in my braided ones in, no luck. Ended up having to replace the whole hard line with the one off my red shell, which was successful!

But spoke to soon, the front braided lines fit like ass, which has made a problem with me. Anyone else had issues with front lines on the goodridge braided line kit?

Dunno what to do about this. Probably just buy another pair of lines I guess. I was given this set by the previous owner of the red car. The mount for the bracket on the shock is WAY off.

That's all I managed today, was to wrestle the brakes.

Still the coolant lines and wiring issues to go.

Stay tuned team. Hopefully shouldn't be too long now.

I had the same problem with the fitment of my braided lines from Goodridge. They look hopeless when the car is up on jack's, but it is actually ok once it is down. My car might have failed it's vin, but passed with flying colours on the brake system

Hmm that's good to know it's not just me!

I need to pass a de-cert coming up in less than 2 weeks so will just have to make it look legit for that.

Haha, yea it doesnt look right. But it is. I was scratching my head when i put mine in, i remember thinking "this wont work" but it did. If you are not sure, jack up that one shock a bit, and you should see it looks better

Thanks Keith.

Did the support go into the bracket for the shock too?
