GDII's 1990 G-Limited

Post by GDII »

Hi, new to the forums but owned my MR2 for 3 years now.

This is my 1990 SW20 G-Limited. Mod list at the bottom.

This is what it looked like when I bought it.

And how is looks now.

I decided to by it because a KP Starlet or KE corolla was quite expensive and not as fast as an MR2. Very happy with my purchase.

I added some new slotted and dimpled front rotors with new ferodo excel pads and a new simota panel filter.

I thought it would be a good idea to use it for hillclimbs and Autocross. So I bought some used gravel tyres. 185/65R15.

Put them on the car. Looks quite good too. They only just fit under the front spring perch, just lucky they were worn.

Got second last but had a lot of fun.

I bought some new wheels for my road tyres as running around on gravel tyres that have been grooved out are very loud.

They are BBS RG097 15x6.5+45. They weigh 5.4 Kg each so quite light. They are a factory wheel that was on the Mazda Capella Infini limited edition. 200 cars built.

Then I tried my hand at Autcross.

I got 7th out of 30 against some experienced drivers with purpose built cars.

I haven't done any motorsport since then.

Next I bought a new TRD gear knob and a trademe gear boot and handbrake boot. Good quality items for a good price.

What happened to the front lip?
I write a lot of posts, but that does not mean you will see them.

Broke it on a few driveways. It's off getting fixed so I should have it back for summer.

Nice looking car, pity you couldnt get hold of the BBS RG centres.

How did you get the faded colour back into your wing mirrors? What polish did you use?

These particular wheels had the Infini symbol on the center but I personally don't like these wheels with the centre cap on. I bought them without centre caps anyway.

Clear coat is pealing off. I use Turtlewax Super hard shell wax but it doesn't last long any more on the faded parts. So I wipe them down with CRC tyre shine when I want them to look good. Same for the faded rear wing. Dirt sticks to it after a while unless it rains but looks good for long enough.

I repainted the standard 15" wheels silver with Duplicolor wheel paint.

Primered with etch primer.

And the final coats with the silver.

They came out really good. I haven't used them since I repainted them. I need to get them rebalanced as I took the wheel weights off for painting.
Also still have the gravel tyres on so they are not much use at the moment.

I got my brother to make me some plugs for the intake pipe where I took the resonators off. About 3 years ago when I bought a new air filter I took off the resonators and plugged them up with some timber I cut using some drill saws and plugged up the drill hole with some random bolts I found.

I am very happy with the look of them over what I had before.

Also I remedied the leaking T-tops with black silicone sealant and glad wrap. Works very well and no more leaks. Even in heavy driving rain.

Nice photos mate, good thing getting into photoshop too. can do some remarkble things there.

Keep a shammy cloth in your car so next time your out early or somewhere give it a quick whip down and then take the fotos, unless you wanted that wet look =p

Thanks

I did have a cloth in the car but there was way too much dust on the car to wipe it off. Don't want to scratch the paint more than it already is.

I will remember for next time if I am out taking photos. It would have come out much more shiny if it wasn't wet.

Slowly making progress on fixing up the MR2 to get it looking nice again.

Bought a second hand aircon control unit just for the buttons as mine were wearing out. Just swapped over the buttons so now I have a spare aircon control unit. The A/C button on the other unit was worn worse than mine so I left my one in. Still have most of it chrome on my one.
