The pistons on this 307,000km GEN4 3SGTE aren't too dirty. Some more so than others.

The cylinder head of the GEN4 3SGTE isn't terribly dirty. Some of the exhaust valves are a bit crusty on the faces so they will need cleaned.

Removing the lower sump pan was a slight challenge. Ended up getting a sharp blade to cut the silicone seal on this face after removing all the M6 bolts and 2 nuts.

It's been sitting for quite a while so drained most of the oil into the pan. Gravity decided to take over rather fast once the seal was broken and spill what was left over the floor. 😅

The GEN4 3SGTE uses a 2 part sump compared to the older 3S engines. This is the lower pan formed from steel. Luckily this isn't dented and only needs a new coat of paint.

The upper sump of the GEN4 3SGTE. I've already taken all the bolts out here that connect it to the block. You can see the oil pickup and the baffle that's on the windage tray poking through.

There are 4 different bolts plus 2 nuts here. 6x M6 short caps screws, 4x M8 bolts, 6x M6 bolts, 2x M6 nuts and 2x M6 long cap screws.

We ran into a slight issue with the cap screws under the sump pan holding the upper sump to the front cover/oil pump.

Because the are quite deep in the sump you need a long 5mm Allen key to get them. I have some but they have a ball end at the long side. Unfortunately due to that shape there is less surface area for the tool to hold against the bolt head so it ended up just slipping inside the head and damaging it. So I had to drill the head off one then cut the ball end off the key and remove the other I had damaged.

For some reason these were very tight for an M6 bolt. Either way, the oil pump isn't getting reused so I don't have to extract the left over thread but I will need to buy 2 new cap screws to replace the damaged ones.

This is the upper aluminium sump of the GEN4 3SGTE. Same idea as the GEN3 however it has a notch and 2 fixing points for the crank position sensor to mount to.

It's a little bit dirty but I'll clean it up. Definitely missed a few oil changes.

The windage tray and baffle on the GEN4 3SGTE. It's a little sludgy. Clean up!

The sump pan definitely had some nasty sludge in it and based on the silicone seal being rather crusty and brittle this engine has got hot at some point. The O rings for the oil pump were very flat and hard but they tend to do that after this many years. They were installed on the engine in 1997.

These ports take oil from the pump, down to the filter and oil pressure regulator then back to the engine block to supply the rest of the engine. New O rings will go here.

A little bit of gross in the oil pick up but not bad. I'll clean this properly.

Oil pick up and windage tray off. To get the pick up off the windage tray has to come off at the same time. Fun...

Taking off the windage tray reveals the crank shaft and the bearing caps as well as the connecting rods. Apart from it being a little bit golden there are no signs of damage.

Look at that skinny rod! The GEN4 3SGTE has significantly smaller conrods vs the older versions. Too much boost or knock events can easily bend them and break the engine. Not ideal.

Removing the front cover/oil pump housing.
The gasket fitted to the engine at the factory is paper but the new one is a metal gasket.

You can see the 2 studs in the bottom right. This is where the oil pickup bolts to. Then the pump gear in the top right sucks it up and pressurizes it sending it across over the crank, into the right hand tube, down to the filter and pressure regulator then back up into the hole on the top right to the block sending around the engine.

Front cover off. You can see where the oil contacts the front of the block in the pump assembly. The wet part just to the bottom left of the crank and the part in the top right with the number in it.

The rest of the dirty block is from the crank case and sump area that the pump assembly closes off.

Rear crank main seal retainer off. A bunch of M6 bolts hold it on.
