I've sometimes thought of removing these from my air intake ducting. There are two of them in the boot space in an AW11- one in the drivers side rear corner and the other underneath the housing that holds the air filter on the passengers side. These are basically two large black plastic boxes that junction in to the air intake tract.
A lot of MR2 owners on other forums (not this one) recommend removing them to provide a throatier, louder sound, however these are very important and should be left in. Here's an interesting article that summarises why very well: http://www.ehow.com/info_12156112_air-i ... or-do.html
