SW20 Wheels & tyres

Post by sean&sam »

Hi members.
Have a 93 SW20 that i may like to get some decent wheels for sometime soon, though im not sure what size i could comfortably increase to.
I was thinking 18 inch, would this be too big or 17's be better?
Thanks.

You can go 18s on the back, 17s on front without it looking like a roller-skate.

I'll have some 17x8 +35 and 17x9+38 Modia KS-05 (Keiichi Tsuchiya) for sale very soon, picking them up from being prepped on Monday and getting them powder coated this week.

How much do you want to spend?

They look like these, I think I'll have mine powder coated silver though.

Ok. Not sure yet on cost, the MR2 i have needs a bit of a cleanup in general, but i am quietly looking at wheels as they come along.

You want to stay between 15 and 17 inches on a SW20 ideally. Going for a 205/40/17 on the front and a 235/40/17 on the back is idea good. A 17x7 and 17x8 staggered wheel setup is good for these

Ok. I was looking at 17 or 18 but thought 18 may be a bit too big. Id be happy with 17's.

Like Al said, 18 for the front is a bit big. Can do 17 front and 18 rear if you wanted.

For the front 17x7 with a 205/40R17 or 215/40R17 is a good size. Offset between +45 and +30 should fit. 17x8 with a 215/40R17 will fit. Offset of +35 +/-2 should work. Other tyre sizes and wheels might fit but depending on your suspension setup, stock struts vs coilovers this dictates what you can fit.

Rears can eat up large wheels and tyres but going outside of the 235/40R17 diameter and width can affect the cars handling and feel.
17x8 with a 225/40R17 or 235/40R17 will work.Between +30 and +50 should work. 17x9 with a 235/40R17 or 245/40R17 will work too. Between +30 and +45 will work. +35 is best and anything lower than that requires camber and lip rolling if your car is lowered.

Yea that looks good. Not too big or small. I have the standard 15's and they look too small.

Probably the bigger problem thsts consuming my time at the moment is my t tops leak.. especially with the last weeks worth of downpours. Do you have the same issues? Im in the process of using black silicone to build up the sunken rubber.. its working but slowly.

The main problem is the vertical gap between the car rubber and t-top panel rubber gets bigger as the old rubber shrinks. This is where the leak happens.
What part are you putting it on?

You can get eccentric t-top guides also( if you haven't got them already). I think there are currently some on trademe, or I got mine from mr2-Ben.co.uk

Eccentric guides bring the holes for the locking rods in the t top down and in which puts more pressure on the rubber. They fixed my leaking roof.
