Turbo spin at idle - resistance

Post by vrtigo »

Hi guys. Just recently rebuilt my turbo (TD05HR), and now its not spinning at idle. I can spin it by hand, but any tiny amount of sideways pressure on the shaft makes it bind up.

I tightened the shaft nut to 80 in-lbs, which was in the lower end of the 75-100 in-lbs spec stated online.

Have I $&#$% up? Or does it just need to wear in?

Don't know much about turbos but I Recently rebuilt my Td05. My understanding is that the shaft runs on a film of oil pressure between the two brass bushings.
So is there definitely oil pressure getting to the turbo? Could something be blocking oil flow?
Was the heat shield loose?
any bits of metal on the shaft? - I took the time to polish it, idk if it makes any difference.

Just a few ideas that might help

For posterity, Ive had zero problems so far, and the shaft play is still good and tight. It still binds a little when spinning by hand, but Im not longer worried.

There's a spinning turbo then there is the spinning turbo creating boost pressure. Turbo speed = boost pressure. The faster it spins, the more pressure it creates. Until your ceramic shaft gives up and throws its toys out the window and leaves them on the road behind you.
