Gasket goo/sealant

Post by voxson »

Hi all,

Im ordering a replacement cam cover gasket from toyota today, and have seen recomendations to put ?atv/some kind of gasket sealer on the lipped corners.

Where is the best place to get this & what brand do I look for?

Cheers

Buy the grey stuff from Toyota. It's best. But really most RTV products work fine.

$68 for a generous sized tube - does it expire?

 they're normally $10

Yes, they slowly go dry. If you seal it without air after you use it then you'll probably get to reuse it.

Or buy your colour of choice from the Permatex or CRC ranges. Like you said not much is needed to seal the corners of the cam caps.

It was the only one on offer at Hamilton Toyota ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Fair enough - I see SCA has a few options starting from $14. Where do I go for a $10 tube?

Pretty much any parts store. SCA makes their money from being slightly cheaper than Repco, and they can be cheap when they sell oil below cost, but they make their money back on other items, especially electrical parts.

The "normal" "red"/"grey"/"black" stuff is normally $10-13, and yes the expensive RTV silicone is better, but I wouldn't say the cheaper stuff is bad nor would I recommend spending more than $20 because it doesn't get twice as good.

If you're doing a sump or gearbox casing then sure, splash out on the ThreeBond but it's not really needed for a valve cover which is going to come off again a lot sooner.

Obviously, once you start getting to the fancier RTV silicone then you'll pay more (sensor-safe, high-temp, etc.)

Can freshly re-recommend Threebond 1215. Really welded up my oil sump leaks recently.
