Cost to budget for a 3VZ rebuild.. Anyone have an idea?

Post by Mr-Paulio »

Hey team,
I guess the next step with my 3VZ turbo build is to get it to an engine builders. I honestly have no clue what this may cost. So just looking for some guidence regarding how much I should have in the bank before I start talking to shops please.
Here is some more specific detail.
The engine is torn down, but pistons still in the block.

I would be after all the testing and machining required to the block and heads.
New rings and bearings.
Valve guides and prep/machining on the heads. Plus anything else recommended? (I believe the engine had 230ks on it)
I have MLS head gaskets and ARP Studs I will supply.
But want the engine builders to fit these along with the heads also.
From this point I will continue the rest of the build myself.

Any idea what I might need to budget for this sort of work from a professional/reliable shop?

Thanks in advance guys. :D

When I rebuilt my 3vz in 2013 the parts alone were approx 2k at trade price from parts master
-Rings
-All bearings
-Top end rebuild kit
-Bottom end rebuild kit

You could probably expect another 2-3k for labour but others might be able to chime in on that.

For the other engine parts go see JPR, he's infamous for being cheap even though he's selling exactly the same stuff as partmaster

Are you planning on a freshen up or forged internals for boost?

Ouch. Have to say that was a bit more than I expected. Good to know from experience though. Thanks.

Just a freshen up. Not planning massive boost. I figure with the right turbo on a large displacement engine even 8psi makes a massive difference

Mine was about 3k including labor. You'll need a good machine for the MLS gaskets so may increase cost further

May as well swap in a 2gr and call it a day. Might not have the same power as a turbo 3vz, but it won’t be far off considering the engines are nearly 20 years different in design. A standard 2gr with an exhaust, which will need to be fabricated will make 200+ rwkw.

You have a valid point and it might be worth investigating.... Although then I have to start with engine mounts, ECU, Wiring, cert etc all over again....

You'll need a cert anyway for the turbo, the 2GR would be lighter but the extra effort to get it done. They're also quite expensive but if you sell your current bits that can help fund it.

Im pretty sure you dont need a cert for a turbo. Just a Change in engine/displacement and anything above 20% more power (but how do they know right)
My car is certed for 3ltr v6. No engine number is quoted.
I possibly could even get away with the 3.4ltr? But I feel that is more risky then a turbo on the engine it's certed for.
Plus another pro for the turbo, Choo Choo noises! :P

Legally you do, whether insurance will notice IDK, I doubt cops will be in the know enough to be able to ticket you and you can always go to the VTNZ Takanini monkeys for a WOF :P
