Next upgrade I now need is an LSD.
I'd really love a torsen, has anyone bought one in NZ?
Are there any local quaife reps or can this only be purchased online?
Also does anyone know if i can buy an aftermarket LSD but still use my open diff axles?
And do they include the Speedo driver gear or do I have to reuse my current one, which is broken

Aftermarket LSDs are designed for the non-LSD axles and blue drive gear. You will need a new blue gear as they don't come with one.tomnomnom wrote:Next upgrade I now need is an LSD.

Torsen types are good except when you lift a wheel. If you become really good at controlling your car a light stab on the brake pedal will force the LSD to work again.

Good to know I don't have to buy more axles! Any experience in purchasing?
I had a factory LSD in a previous MR2 and did not find it very effective.
I've driven an MR2 with a plate type which had been shimmed very tightly and was basically acting as a 2-way which I found quite predictable and think the best option for my vehicle on track.
But, the torsen stands out as a diff that won't wear plates or lose viscosity and it's not like we can get quick changes for our setups so seems like the most cost effective (for my vehicle use) in the long run.
Had this thing sliding on the track and would like to try an amatuar drift event where I won't get kicked off

The factory LSD is pretty weak actually. Based on some comments that it might be a viscous but uses the gearbox oil instead of a sealed unit using thick oil specific to an LSD.
Plate diffs are good as they will always do the same thing. Power and lock, off power and semi locking depending on 1.5 or 2 way settings.
The Torsen is great. I'd get this or go brand name TRD (coz TRD). The only downside to them is like I mentioned when you lift a wheel. That's it. Other than that they are great on the road and track as they don't make noise, they don't wear out and they lock up well in most situations.

Don't think that 2 way in a SW20 would be twice the fun though The only thing it would double, is the speed you enter the hedge backwards at.

Fun fact actually, my rev 4 3SGE mr2 actually came with a factory Torsen LSD, I haven't driven a non LSD mr2 (assuming my LSD is still in there and hasnt been taken out by a previous owner) so I really don't have anything to compare it to, but its pretty good IMO.

On a more serious note, I don't see the point of a 2-way either unless you plan on drifting. You probably want some slip on decel, it also helps to be able to clutch in while parking.

2 way TRD in the red thing's E153 never caused me any worries, works fine. Hoping to have the red thing back on the road soon too, (WIP). Torsen in the GT86 is ok even if the car is designed to hang its arse out with the slightest application of throttle. And the LSD that my AW had in its E51 (speedo drive gear got eaten) was brilliant but ONLY if you used the right gearbox oil. And on that note, having tried a number of gearbox oils, I'd say that Motul or Redline are the only ones worth bothering with. And in my experience the right gearbox oil makes a HUGE (pardon the pun) difference.
