Catch Can Recomendations

Post by GlanzaAtHeart »

Hey guys,

I am looking at getting a catch can for my rev 2 SW20 Turbo, does anyone have any recommendations on what one to get?

I've never used one before, and I can find a plethora under the $150 mark, plus fittings and other niggly bits.

Anyone have any advice?

Cheers everyone

Get one that works. Not just a can with fittings.
Something that has a system like this one is best. Filters and baffles are a must.

I have a catch can similar to the one Phil listed.
Mine was maybe 80 bucks but had a filter and a baffle within. For some time I also ran stainless steel wool within to catch the vapour but found it made no difference to the filtering (I have negligible/normal blowby anyways).

Some of the cheaper ones are clearly just boxes wth fittings so stay away unless you want to put in some baffles and maybe some fine ss wool.

Thanks for the info guys, really appreciate it.

I noticed on the one Phil recommended, it says it's an Oil/Air Separator, is there a difference between this and a catch can?

Baffles and filters seem to be a must otherwise seems to be a waste.

Cheers for the info team, really helpful.

Catch can/Oil air separator is the same thing.

Hopefully you can find something in your budget that has the correct features to make it worth putting one in. Otherwise like you say, it's a waste.

Look around for one off a gen 3. By all accounts they seem to work fairly well and are small enough to fit above engine. May need to route drain into a container if you don’t have a sump connection.

Or a GEN5. They drain back to the head.

Anyone have any experience on this kit?

Couldn't find a gen 3 or 5 one unfortunately, but a separate kit is fine with me, just got to figure out where to mount it.

Cheers guys.

Here's where I mounted mine. I used the factory points of the coolant filler neck (since I have an aftermarket one).

I think the one you linked is ok but doesn't seem to have any baffles (at least in the pictures). Plenty of those cylinder types around though.

That has to be the nicest engine bays I've seen. Very well organised and functional. I'll bet you don't drive on any dirt roads?

Thanks mate! Bloody hard to keep it that way. I avoid any kinda dirt roads and just dirt in general (perks of it being a weekend car I guess)

Just an update for anyone looking at this later on

Ended up buying this kit: https://www.shopsaas.com/saas-st1010-oi ... llet-600ml

3 reasons mainly:

- Actually a quality one, instead of 80% being from eBay, aliexpress, or some other chinese sub-brand with no proven quality

- Not take more than a month for shipping

- Baffled with a filter. Hard to come by in more than a 250ml can, that's quality checked and has a warranty. This one was one of very few that had a diagram proving how it baffled. 3 baffle system gives me confidence

There are various kits under $100, however I couldn't find one that was proven baffled, and wasn't made skeptically in China.

Will arrive in a week or so, will see how I go and update from there.

Nice. Looks like its pretty decent and fits the criteria. Look forward to your thoughts on it when it's installed etc.

I like the look of it especially since you can remove the top to inspect & clean filters. Might even be able to add some steel wool to help filtering. I presume the lower port is for draining but what is top bung for? Is it a dip stick or peep hole, possibly?

Jim, I believe it is so you can attach a breather filter to the top. I got one for mine, just haven't installed it.
