Anyone used a swirl pot on an MR2? And stories, recommendations??

Tyres / rust repairs & bodywork / lubrication etc - please post topics such as these that are not specific to any model of MR2 here.

Anyone used a swirl pot on an MR2? And stories, recommendations??

Post by Mr-Paulio »

Hey guys,
As per above wondering about any info on a swirl pot for an MR2?

Anyone tried one?
Success, feedback, stories?
Any recommendations?
I see there is all sorts of options.

Basically I feel I am still having issues fully bleeding the system with all the factory bleed fittings now gone. And the 3VZ engine. (No heater lines, After market Ali radiator etc)
I'm going to add a bleed port on a ball valve at the top of the radiator.
But also been considering a swirl pot. As this seems to be common for front engine, rear mounted radiators such as drift cars or offroad.
So I'm interested in any knowledge or experience with them.
Cheers in advance :D

A swirl pot would be really useful to have but the radiator is a key component to bleeding an MR2. Ok you have a 3VZ but still, if you don't bleed the radiator the coolant will not flow from the engine.

Toyota did some pretty intense things with the Corolla WRC car with swirl pots and expansion tanks with 3 radiator caps with different pressure ratings. They had 2 bleed hoses from on top of the radiator which led to an expansion tank that then drained into the port on the thermostat housing. The MR2 got this screw fitting but the Celica did not, and way back in 1990. This tank had a radiator cap on it too. The swirl pot after the coolant tree on the back of the head had a cap too with a 1.5kgf rating and along with the radiator itself having a cap. I guess it was done this way to make bleeding an automatic process so when the car left service after a coolant related fix it wouldn't need to be bled at service.

That would be my next move Paul. Get one from NZED Fluid Connectors, they are great. If you think in terms of bleeding a standard AW you really only need to bleed the top of the radiator, the top of the heater core, and burp the filler in the engine bay (let it burp until it settles down). As long as you can do those 3 things you should be absolutely fine. If your V6 has no heater (like my SW) then yeah just add a bleeder to the top of the after-market radiator. 8)

I have posted a picture of it some time ago

I'd be keen to see a picture of the set up and know where you got it?
I searched in the forum but didn't have any luck finding anything.

Swirl pot mounted as high as possible in engine bay .
Made from box section Stainless steel brackets on side and mounted
to the battery tray support.Heater hose runs to bottom of pot out of top to cylinder head
This allows any air in the heating system ( top of cooling system ) to escape and not be dragged around cooling system.
Seems to work for me :-)
