IMHO they're the best all season street tyres you can get in AW sizes. If you don't have enough grip on them to do reckless speed for the conditions then either you need to improve your driving or perform maintenance.
GDII wrote:Yeah looking at width, sidewall and overall diameter the 205 would be the better tyre. For the speedo, the 195/55R15 is 3.4% out while the 205/50R15 is 1.3% out. Nothing to worry about. RE003 are great tyres. Epic turn in and direction change response and really cheap for what they are. Just wish they made 235/40R17 for the back of the SW20.
I didn't specify but I meant 205 wide but yes. I think the 195 would lead to a little sidewall lean on a 6.5" but it's pretty damn close, I doubt the average driver would notice a difference and would probably get them if 205/50 wasn't available.

Thanks all, So in conclusion the "205/50/15 RE003s" is the best for the Mr-s wheels on a AW11. What do these normally retail at?
these will be my next investment i think :)

Ring up a Bridgestone or Tony's tyres store. But only buy when they have the buy 3 get 1 free deal or buy 1 get 1 half price. This deal is rather common or at least it was.

Hi all, have been reading through as much of this and other forums as I can. Based on whats available at reasonable prices at the moment for the SW20 R16s, can somebody recommend me which might be the best to go for (full set)

Fronts: 205/45/R16
Rears: 225/45/R16.
There are more options in the 50 profile but I guess that isnt really the ideal fitment.

Toyo T1R: around 8-900 for a set
Goodyear Eagle F1 D5: 650 for a set (only 50s, cant find any Asymmetric to fit the rears)
Yokohama AD08R Advan Neova: around 1000-1100 for a set
Bridgestone Potenza RE003: Unsure of costs
Hankook?

Obviously the Yokohamas are probably the best but I don't intend on doing much track time, just need something that grips at high speed on the corners, and wont kill me if its a bit damp. Apologies if this has been covered to death, I know the club seem to favorite the T1R's but that was from about 4 years ago.

Those sizes are good for 6-7" wide wheels. What are your wheel specs?

You could run a 50 profile on the rear. A lot of us including me run 245/40R17 as the RE003 only comes in that size for wider wheels. The 225/50R16 is only 0.57% larger than this size. However they are 4.02% larger than stock tyres.
You will notice quite an acceleration loss if your car is NA and you will notice on a turbo too but less.
Fronts a 205/50R16 will fit if you have to use them. 45 is a better profile though.

Toyo T1R are good but we mostly have to stick to them due to the 15" wheel. These are the only tyre choice we have.
Eagle F1s can be good depending on where they are made.
AD08R are more a track tyre and after a few heat cycles they can have less grip than they did from new. Not the best tyre for a daily or only street car.
RE003 pricing can be very good. Contact your local Firestone store or Tonys Tyres and ask for pricing. They do buy 3 get one free or buy 1 get 1 half price deals a lot. That's when you buy them. Check that the RE003 comes under this deal as they cycle through models that are part of that deal.

All 4 of those tyres will give you plenty of grip, some better than others but are all a good choice.

Thanks for the info there, thats pretty much exactly in line with the feedback I've come across here and from the international forums around the net. Sorry I should have specified the wheel size is 16x6 and 16x7. I could potentially run a wider tire at the rear I guess but would like to try and stick to recommended sizes.

If the T1R, F1 D5 and RE003 are all very similar in terms of performance and durability, then it will come down to price. But everyone seems to have differing opinions on which is better.

Bridgestone may have changed their deal so that they only offer buy 1 get 1 free only on the shit tyres. They did at my local. In late 2016 I got re003 rear and s001 front for like 950 including balancing and alignment.

They cycle through what tyres they offer for those deals. Sometimes it's the cheaper tyres, sometimes it's the RE003.

Went with T1Rs all round, I think any of those tyres would have been good options though. T1R is very solid, I dont think anyone could actually use a better tyre than that unless they were doing heavy track time. For twisty roads on a sunny day they are outstanding.

Any name brand performance class tyre with a pretty soft compound would be good. Just go with whatever you feel is likely to be the best based on price reviews or even brand. Toyo Yokohama Bridgestone Pirelli Michelin Dunlop etc all good. Unless chasing track times $800+ tyres with a good alignment should be more than enough for street use and driving your midship runabout even in the rain.

Last time I looked at T1Rs in 17" sizes I was looking at well into the $1K+ price bracket. The RE003 were $850 a set. What sizes did you go with in the T1R?

The T1Rs were $870 for 205/45/16 and 225/45/16, but would have been around $740 if I went with a 50 profile. I was keen on the Bridgestones as well but they didnt good deals going for the 16s at the time, they were wanting around 1150 or something for the set. But when the deals are available they are a really good option

Does anyone run semi slick style tyres on there road car?
through work I can get some cheap deals on certain tyres and brands, and the Yokohama AD08R is one of the options available this month on special.
These seem to be not a fully semi slick option, but are they maybe still to sketchy for a road tyre if a bit of rain does come down?

AD08R are good but I hear they go average after a few heat cycles. Probably best to get a UHP road tyre like RE003, Toyo T1R, Eagle F1, Yokohama S drive or similar. No point having a semi slick tyre that feels a bit crap when cold and only using it on the road. I've never had any issues with grip on a high performance road tyre. If you do then you are driving too fast.
