Spanner spinning weekend (4-5/07/15 aka this weekend)

Post by mknz »

My Sdub is crying oil from the cam, crank and valve cover seals  and I don't know when if ever the timing belt was last changed. I want to meet more of you on this upcoming club run but I don't want to be the broken down one.

I'm a broke student who really wants to learn more so I'm going to DIY this. If anyone wants to give tips/help me/hangout/show who's stronger on bolts feel free to come round. I will reward your turning up efforts with as much food and drink as you want(tell me what you want beer Inc.). I'm currently disassembling following the BGB and getting as far as I can.

I know it's short notice(just finished uni exams) and I don't expect anyone to turn up especially since I live a little bit far away(manurewa area). If you do I appreciate it a lot, even if it's just to swear at stuck bolts.

If anyone has a belt tension gauge please can I borrow it? I think it's the only tool I don't have and feeler gauges maybe(my dad has them somewhere). If you have any good tips or advice I'll take them on board.

Alternator belt
Timing belt kit
Tensioner
Water pump
Throttle body seals
Valve cover seal
Cam seals
Crank seals
My shopping list, anything else I need?

Highly accurate and advanced  . If I'm in a pinch what is the finger unit of measurement?

Usually it's about 10mm of movement. You can also feel when it's too tight because the belt will be forcing back.

If it squeals it's too loose. If it destroys stuff it was too tight.

Nip it up until it doesn't squeal any more.

As the guys said, feel it with your fingers and go for maybe a cm of flex max.

Working around it ATM. I don't have enough experience to drop it unless someone else does. I have no other issue with dropping it, I'm putting in fresh coolant while I'm at it anyway. Dropping it seems like more work than is being saved and more money for more replacement gaskets

I just did this recently without dropping the engine. It can be done if you know what you are doing. Which I didn't at the start. Not the easiest. You have to take the cam belt covers and the engine mount off all at the same time otherwise nothing will come off.
