Driver door window mechanism Sw20

Post by chief1eye »

Anyone got a good diagram or photos of the driver door window mechanism for a MR2 Sw20 1990, The motors working fine but something has come adrift at the front of the window that closest to the mirror. Its falling down that end when the window is going up. Its not my car but my young fellow who picked up a 1990 Sw20 NA. Thanks

Take off the door card and see what is failing. The pivot point on the rail the glass mounts to might be falling out as it reaches the top. The vertical guide rails could be broken or out of place.

Sometimes the metal on the X fatigues and snaps
A mig weld will sort it but you will have to remove it from the the door first .

My educated guess is a broken tab on motor regulator. Like others have said it's best to pull apart and see what is broken.

Just a bit of an update, disassembled the window mechanism and found the one of the mount for the drive is broken off. See picture below. Its also got another section worst for wear.

Let me know if anyone have a spare window mechanism, drivers door.

Yep that's what is known as window regulator. Best to MIG the tabs back on with support steel and assemble with lovktight and large washers to spread load. They tend to work loose and that's why it fails. Don't buy another as they are all the same.

Might have to see if anyone has a spare as Ive found that the bottom 2 tabs are gone already no where to be seen and now I have one of the top tabs broken off. need to fabricate more than I'm capable of doing. Anyone got a spare drivers side regualator mechansim willing to sell? or are they the same as another model toyota ???? Its a 1991 MR2 GTS

They are the same across all SW20 models and years. Just remember to strengthen tabs and use large washers when reinstating.

Good time to fix any other common door problems like speaker replacement, wiring loom fix and lube + adjust window tracks.

Have a look in the bottom of the door. The broken bits might be sitting there.

Yep found all the pieces. One was in the bottom of the door the other was actually still bolted in place . My son's friend will hopefully be able to weld the bits together and strengthen them. We give this a try first anyhow. But if anyone has a spare please still let me know.

Thanks

If you get into trouble I'm sure I have a spare. Was holding onto a couple as mine have not broke yet. Beefed them up with larger washers and lock tight to prolong their life.

i've got a spare here with no motor, easy enough to swap yours onto it. I can even mig it up if you get stuck.

Send it down with all the broken bits and I will weld it back together before Christmas .
That's if no one up your way can weld it for you up your way :-)
