MR2 Otago September run to Alexandra

Post by Curly »

On Saturday 22 September we will assemble at Sunnyvale Stadium carpark at 7.45am, for departure at 8.00am sharp.
There will be comfort stops on the way, although three cars are required to be in Alexandra by 11am, which means that all our cars will be there by 11am. That does mean that you will be able to source a parking spot ahead of those who arrive later.
The reason that three of our cars are required to be there early is that the Steam Punk Association have requested an AW11, an SW20 and a Spyder so the winners of the Tea Pot Racing will be able to ride “in a very sweet sports car”. The cars are all sorted for their ride in the procession. Hope you will cheer them on as they drive by.
We have booked into the “The Post Office Cafe and Bar” 2 Blyth St, Clyde. The booking is under my name and is set for 5.30pm so that those who are returning home can do so at a reasonable hour.
We must have numbers by next Monday 17th as the area is extremely busy and dining numbers are in very high demand. The menu as below:

Kind regards

Hi Pam,

You do release that the Blossom Festival parade is on the 22nd? It will be very busy in Alex all weekend. I'm guessing since you are required to be here by 11:00 the cars will form part of the procession?

I might join in for the lunch at Postoffice. Normally I go into hiding that weekend to avoid all the tourists.

Hi Jim
Yes I believe I put 22nd in the message.
Only the three chosen cars are in the procession as they are invited by another group,
We're not having lunch at the Post Office, we are having dinner there. If you and Suzanne are coming for dinner, please confirm so I can add to the current booking.
Looking forward to catching up

Sounds good. Hope you have some lollies to throw into the crowd.

Include myself for dinner and I'll catch-up with the group for a burger & beer. Been a long time so hopefully I can meet some of the new members.

On Saturday we were in Alexandra to see the Blossom Festival procession. The trucks came out first and they were in pristine condition and a real credit to their drivers. They looked new, and they had their working loads on board. Even their tractors, or whatever their load was, were also pristine. Can you imagine 5 concrete mixers in a row in their blue and gold colours, looking like new? They were great. Then came the old cars. All looking wonderful. Next the Steam Punk guys and gals. We, our club, had been invited by the Steam Punk group to enter one car of each model of MR2 to transport the prize winners of the teapot racing held earlier. The cars belonged to Roger Cain, Alan Smith and Ray Harris.
Everyone went to Pioneer Park in the afternoon.
Later in the afternoon, we met up with members who made the trip from Invercargill and most of us had dinner at the Post Office Cafe in Clyde. Everyone enjoyed their meals. No complaints.
Photos will follow, of our cars in the procession, also our 5 car fleet of MR2s looking pristine, as we joined up in Alexandra, plus Spyders from Invercargill

Nice pics Pam. I fixed up the earlier post by deleting extras but can’t flip the photos up correct way.

Must be one of the only 1996 NZDM SW20s ever sold. I've only seen or heard of 1990-1992 NZDM. The white corner lights made it stand out. I thought Australia because Toyotas information shows that but NZ and AU models came under the same category. I hope it's well looked after as it's an extremely rare car.

Ive got a feeling that Giltrap may have been the dealer he purchased it from.
It was a long time ago and I was a party to the purchase of it. I cant swear to the dealer but for some reason Giltrap comes to mind, and they knew the history of the car as they had sold it and serviced it

NZ cars were classed under the AU model type which is why I thought it could be an AU import but then looking at the Carjam data its first mileage record is around 8,000km so definitely NZ new. You obviously know more about this car than I do. As you can probably tell I'm just really interested in anything special about SW20s. This one being one of the rare unicorn cars that doesn't fit the normal JDM imports that are normally seen.
