Benckj wrote:Makes sense on gaskets. Figured good time to do fuel filter as tank empty and lines drained and most likely never been done. Can get aftermarket generic type for about $25. One of our close club members works at BNT and sure he would cut you a good deal. Otherwise Broomfish is under sponsor for fluids & filters.
I love this idea.... change the fuel filter... this is brilliant! I get a better deal through BNT than our good friend can as I found out not that long ago... lol. Adding this to my list of things to look into getting. Thanks Jim!

For testing the thermostat: get an old jug, boil it, dunk and see if it opens up. That work for older style completely mechanical ones, I'm not sure what the SW has

HFH is the one of the right of the oil filter (Covered in white heatwrap) and HFHOE is the hose on the left that goes under the waterpump. Both significantly easier to replace on an NA than a turbo, just something to check on the day that they aren't brittle and falling to pieces.

Correction, something to check NOW, so if they need replacing you can order them and have them ready on the day.

Just for clarification, is that a pic of a gen 3 NA block?

No, it has a steel sump and turbo oil return fitting, so gen2 turbo.

thanks for that... I'll give it a go. I know I didn't overheat the car AT ALL and had no issues with it beforehand, so it should be sweet as!

Has anyone had any problems with after market spark plugs?

right... no wonder I had no clue. The only reason these pipes would get changed is if they were rusty... this shouldn't happen if coolant has been used (which I ALWAYS use, however; previous owners????) I will check the condition of the hoses.

They are rubber hoses, not the steel pipes.

Aftermarket spark plugs? Toyota don't make their own. Just grab the correct NGK plugs which should have been standard in the car from factory. Can't remember the code right now though.

Factory plugs are Denso, at least in the 3sgte. Denso or NGK are safe choices. I wouldn't touch a champion plug with a 10foot barge pole.

Of course, and the filter is not upside down so not gen 3. I still wonder if NA's have the HFH's as this would be a definite replacement recomendation that takes organising. Plugs, filters etc can all be done after engine is inplace but these hoses should be done regardless of condition.

I'm gong to use a mirror to look at my NA over the weekend. If the hoses are there I'll be ordering some myself. No aftermarket option here but the dealership prices are reasonable (ie $20-35/each). They also come with those nice spring clips with metal holders to keep depressed. Good idea to keep these in case of other spring clip work (hint-hint).

Oh - about the hoses.

That's what I meant - about the spark plugs. Do I have to get plugs from Toyota or will the BNT ones work fine?
