Does anyone have any ideas on where this could be coming from?

It's either the head gasket or the o-ring and/or gasket sealing the pipes into the back of the water pump. It's definitely been doing it for a while based on the appearance of the block.

Yeah. The dreaded GEN2 3SGTE block crack.

Sorry for the blurry photo but it's from a very cheap borescope. This image shows the crack. The silver is the head, the pink is the head gasket (dried Red Toyota Coolant) and the brown is the block. The photos below show another GEN2 block with a crack in the exact same place behind the water pump on cylinder 1. I suspect the crack on this block is longer than what we can see similar to what is shown below.

So what are the options that people can suggest we do?

Options we came up with were.
1. Replace the block with another good GEN2 3SGTE and swap over everything else putting in new parts that are required.
2. Replace the block with a GEN4 3SGTE version as this has a stronger section around the water pump to prevent this happening. Doing the rest of option 1 at the same time.
3. Replace with a GEN2 3SGE block that needs to be checked over to make sure the bores are good. Drill and tap for oil squirters and anything else the 3SGTE version needs. Block will be free.
4. I'm not really keen on this as it could fail and damage more engine parts but use a block sealer such as Rislone Block seal. Really just a waste of money.

What other options can people suggest?

1. Welding the block
2. Throw in another complete engine and rebuild this one as something a bit more insane

Or as 4. Phil suggested, Blue Devil as it's 100% guaranteed and I have nothing to lose (aside from the turbo, and radiator, and all the piping, and the everything else the water touches)

We may have discussed it but that's not a sensible option....

Starting to disassemble the motor, very slowly. I am looking for an easy way to get the half tank of 2 year old fuel out of the tank - any ideas the best way to do this?

Disconnect the fuel line from the rail and turn the pump on?
